Ultrasound Teaching Doctor (Part-Time / Flexible)
Location: Bromley Emergency Training & Research Ltd, London Bridge, London
We are seeking two clinicians with strong ultrasound experience to join our teaching faculty at our London Bridge training centre. This role is particularly well suited to doctors working towards UK registration (e.g. UKMLA/PLAB), or clinicians taking a break from clinical practice who wish to maintain and further develop their ultrasound skills.
Applications are also welcomed from experienced sonographers or other clinicians with substantial ultrasound expertise and an interest in teaching.
There is clear potential for progression from ad-hoc teaching days to a more substantive educational role over time within a growing and well-established training programme.
Role Overview
As an Ultrasound Teaching Doctor, you will support the delivery of our practical ultrasound courses. These sessions focus on hands-on skill development using normal volunteers, ultrasound simulators, and scannable manikins.
You will work alongside experienced faculty, moving between different ultrasound systems to support candidates in developing confidence with probe handling, image acquisition, and recognising both normal and pathological findings.
Our participants range from complete beginners to those with basic experience, and your role will be central to building their confidence and practical ability in a supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support practical ultrasound training sessions, focusing on probe handling, image optimisation, and pathology recognition
- Guide candidates in the use of a range of ultrasound systems, including handheld devices and simulators
- Provide hands-on support to learners at varying levels of experience
- Develop familiarity with our ultrasound machines, handheld systems (e.g. Butterfly iQ+), and advanced simulators (BodyWorks and HeartWorks)
- Engage with our teaching approach and contribute to a positive and effective learning environment
- Work on a flexible, ad-hoc basis with opportunities to take on greater responsibility over time
Ideal Candidate
- Strong experience in ultrasound is essential (point-of-care ultrasound or diagnostic imaging)
- Completion of a recognised POCUS course or equivalent experience is desirable
- Confident in image acquisition and able to support recognition of key pathological findings
- Good manual dexterity and confidence in handling ultrasound equipment
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly to learners at different levels
- Enthusiastic about teaching and supporting the development of other clinicians
- Motivated to develop within the role, with potential to progress into more senior teaching positions
Course Day Structure
Teaching days run from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm and include a combination of short lectures and four to five practical scanning sessions. You will be actively involved throughout the day, providing hands-on support to candidates.
Benefits
- Competitive daily rate: £160–£180 (dependent on experience), paid weekly
- Opportunity to develop your ultrasound skills and gain exposure to a wide range of PoCUS applications
- Experience working with modern ultrasound technology, including handheld devices and high-fidelity simulators
- Clear pathway to progression into more senior or salaried educational roles
- Flexible working arrangements, ideal for part-time work alongside other commitments
- Meals provided during teaching days
